Orthotics Q&A

What are orthotics?

Custom orthotics, or prescription shoe inserts, are a noninvasive, conservative treatment for many foot problems.

Foot pain isn’t normal, and you shouldn’t ignore it. Plus, foot pain can affect your gait and lead to problems along your kinetic chain — such as back pain, hip pain, or knee pain.

You can find basic orthotics on the shelf at your local drugstore. These over-the-counter inserts are made to fit the “average” foot, but you’re not average. While they may offer a little extra padding and support, they’re no replacement for custom orthotics made for your foot.

Custom orthotics specifically address problems with your feet. These personalized inserts support your feet as you move your lower body. Dr. Sharobeem carefully evaluates your feet and uses precise imaging to custom-design your orthotics.

Orthotics can be rigid or soft, depending on your foot condition.

What types of foot problems benefit from orthotics?

Dr. Sharobeem recommends orthotics for several types of foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Bunions
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Flat feet
  • Hammertoes
  • Heel spurs
  • Bursitis
  • High arches

Custom orthotics can also improve your gait and alleviate knee, hip, or back pain.

They can also help after knee, hip, or lower back surgery. That’s especially true if you also have high arches or flat feet.

How do I get started with custom orthotics?

Schedule an appointment at one of the Manhattan Podiatry Group offices to determine if custom orthotics might help you. Dr. Sharobeem reviews your medical history, evaluates any symptoms, and orders diagnostic imaging, like X-rays or MRI, to assess the structures of your feet.

You then undergo 3D scans of your feet. These scans are sent to a computer that creates the plan for your orthotics. An outside podiatry lab crafts your orthotics.

When the orthotics come in, you return to Manhattan Podiatry Group to have them checked and adjusted to ensure a perfect fit. Dr. Sharobeem looks at your gait and answers any questions about wear.
