Radiofrequency Surgery

Radiofrequency surgery, or RFA, for short, is a non-surgical procedure which ablates, or disables, painful nerve signals. RFA uses the energy to generate heat in a very precise, targeted area. This is a technology which has many medical applications, including back/spine pain, cardiac arrhythmias and destruction of tumors. In the foot and ankle, common conditions that can be treated with RFA are:

  • Neuromas (Morton’s Neuroma)
  • Heel pain related to plantar fasciitis or neuritis (Baxter’s neuritis, medial calcaneal nerve neuritis)
  • Nerve entrapment (when nerves get pinched, often from scar tissue related to previous surgery)

Dr. Sharobeem offers radiofrequency surgery as a successful intervention that provides long-term pain relief for his patients.

This procedure is used to eliminate pain. An electrode is placed into the tissue at the painful site, and an electrical current is then delivered, generating heat that destroys the sensory nerve fibers beneath the skin.

What are the benefits?

This procedure makes it easier to control pain associated with plantar fasciitis by eliminating the sense of pain perception in the heel. Also, this relieves pain for a variety of conditions associated with heel pain.
