Bunions Q&A

What are bunions?

Bunions are bony protrusions that form at the joint of the big toe. A protrusion at the joint of the pinky toe is known as a bunionette.

Bunions happen when the bones at the front part of your foot shift and push your big toe toward your smaller toes. This movement causes the lower part of your big toe to jut out noticeably and sometimes painfully.

Why did I develop a bunion?

Pointy-toed shoes, tight shoes, and high heels don’t cause bunions, but if you’re prone to developing them, these footwear types can contribute to their development.

The major causes of bunions are:

  • Foot deformities
  • Genetics
  • Foot stress
  • Certain medical conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis

Having flat feet, low arches, or loose joints also increase your risk of developing a bunion.

As soon as you notice a bunion developing, have it evaluated and treated by Dr. Sharobeem at Manhattan Podiatry Group. He provides management strategies to slow its progression. Without treatment, your bunion may eventually affect your mobility.

What are the symptoms of bunions?

You may develop the bump of a bunion on just one foot or both feet. Along with the bumpy joint, you may also experience any of the following:

  • Calluses and corns
  • Noticeable pain that flares regularly
  • Soreness
  • Swelling or redness around the affected joint

Over time, the bunion makes it difficult to bend or straighten your big toe. You’re likely to find certain types of shoes uncomfortable to wear.

How do you treat bunions?

Dr. Sharobeem customizes your bunion treatment plan. He considers your pain levels, the size of your bunion, and your activity level when making recommendations.

At first, treatment consists of conservative strategies, including:

  • Changing your footwear
  • Losing weight if you’re overweight
  • Icing your feet
  • Over-the-counter pain medications
  • Orthotic inserts

If these conservative measures don’t relieve the pain and inconvenience of your bunion, Dr. Sharobeem may recommend surgery to remove the bony protrusion. He performs surgery using the latest minimally invasive techniques to help you recover quickly.
